Drawing
Grade 7
We will be concentrating on the basic elements of art in drawing (colour, form, line, shape, space, texture and value). We will explore these elements through the use of a sketch book and various other drawing projects. This year we are focusing on encouraging students to be creative by breaking their sketchbooks down and then building them back up again through different approaches. They will also use their sketchbooks for pre-sketches and studies for other projects in painting, clay and printmaking.
Grade 8
Student artists will be tackling the complex concept of one point perspective through out their drawing unit. They will develop and master the use of a vanishing point and horizon line to accurately create the illusion of 3 dimensional space in a 2 dimensional drawing. Student artists will also learn to enhance 3 dimensional space through shading, colour and various other depth shaping techniques.
Grade 9 Drawing
Art 9 students are given the task of giving emphasis to an individual within a crowd of people. There are several techniques that can potentially be used for this particular visual problem. The artist must select the best techniques given then theme and message of their work.
Painting
Grade 7
We will be taking a different approach to our painting unit this year! We will be studying 2 artists from different cultures (one Canadian and one Australian) to enhance student understanding of the similarities and differences that exist across our globe in art. Student artists will then get a chance to apply each artists' techniques to their own subject matter for their final pieces.
Grade 8
Grade 9
Clay
Grade 7
We will be advancing students' understanding of creating useful 3D clay forms through the use of various clay molding techniques. Student artists will also get the opportunity to develop different approaches to glazing.
Grade 8
Grade 9
Printmaking
Grade 7
Student artists will be getting the opportunity to create Haida inspired prints using multiple printmaking techniques and tools. There will be an animal focus to their final projects where they will learn how to break down complex forms into simplistic, meaningful shapes.
Grade 8
Grade 9
Art Club
Art club will be taking a more sketchbook based style approach this year and will run Thurdays at lunch from October 1, 2015 to March 24, 2016. Students will get a chance to explore their creativity as well as develop various skills in drawing, painting and other 2D media. We will also be examining sketching and art journaling as a positive coping strategy for supporting mental health in junior high.
